Mausoleum of General José Gervasio Artigas is where the remains of the National Hero José Gervasio Artigas, Liberator of Uruguay, Father of the Homeland, Chief of the Orientals, Protector of Free Peoples, rest.
The Mausoleum is located under the great equestrian monument in honor of the Hero in Plaza Independencia in Montevideo, opposite the Presidential Building of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay.
His remains are guarded by the Blandengues Regiment of Artigas N° 1 de Caballería.
Our staff, Journalist Dirce Ramiro and Special Diplomatic Envoy Cmdr. Manuel Fernandez, visited the Mausoleum on the National Holiday of Uruguay commemorating the Battle of Las Piedras on May 18, 1811.
On this date, the forces of General José Gervasio Artigas defeated the enemies and began to establish what is now modern Uruguay.
On the occasion of the visit to the Mausoleum, our staff paid tribute to General José Gervasio Artigas with the military protocol salute to the Hero, and then deposited at the foot of the urn with the mortal remains the Medal of the Order of Melquisedeque in the Grade of Grand Master.
